Chime uses the HSE exposure points system to measure an operative's daily vibration exposure. Every tool type has a vibration score. The longer a tool is used, the more points it adds. An operative's points for the day are added up across every tool and every site they worked on that day.
How Points Are Worked Out
Each relevant tool type has a vibration score, measured in m/s².
Points build up for every minute the tool is used. Tools with a higher score build up points much faster.
The day's points are the total across every tool used that day, on every site.
Example: a tool with a vibration score of 5 m/s² adds 50 points an hour. Using it for 2 hours adds 100 points, which reaches the action level.
What Each Level Means
Under 100 points: Under action value. No action needed.
100 to 400 points: Over action value. This is the exposure action value. The operative should keep any further use of vibrating tools to a minimum that day. Their supervisor will be in touch.
More than 400 points: Over exposure limit. This is the daily exposure limit. The operative should stop using vibrating tools for the rest of the day. Their supervisor will be in touch.
Things to Know
Levels are based on the exact total. 99.7 points is still under the action value, even if it shows as 100 on screen.
Exactly 400 points is over the action value, not over the limit. The limit is only reached above 400.
The levels are daily. There's no weekly total.
Reaching a level never stops an operative from logging more tool use. The true figure is always recorded.
If a tool has no vibration score, it can still be logged, but it adds no points. The day's total is shown as understated so you know it may be higher.
Use Case
Operatives checking where they stand before starting a job.
Managers and health and safety teams reviewing exposure and deciding what action to take.
💡 Tips
In the mobile app, each tool shows how long it can still be used before the operative reaches the action value. It's a quick way to plan a job.
Figures are provisional until the log is submitted at sign-out. Only submitted figures appear in over-exposure alerts.
